For decades, the air-cooled flat-six was part of the 911’s identity. Its distinctive sound, mechanical character, and simplicity became deeply rooted in Porsche history.
That changed with the arrival of the 996-generation 911 in 1997, when Porsche introduced a water-cooled engine to the model for the first time.
